Time Management

26 Jan

After having the majority of my classes for the first time this term, its become clear that I will be very busy and busy might be an understatement.  I’ll be working on client projects and getting some good experience. From the sounds of it, I’ll be spending more time in our classes’ computer lab, which will come in handy to be in a constant place, bust still a lot of work.

What I am asking from you is if anyone has some good time management ideas or tips that have worked for them in the past?   I plan on trying to keep my calendar updated with projects and work times so keep that part square, but it still is possible that things can slip through the cracks. Perhaps something like a to-do list or something.

What do you all do for time and project tracking? Also anyone have any good blackberry or smart phone applications?

I see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it looks nice, just need to figure out what to do in this real world.

Anyways, its time for me to hit the hay and get some much needed sleep.

Final Project

19 Jan

Finding motivation for my final project this term has been slightly frustrating.  I hope to  give a link to my finished project shortly (It is Due Thursday afterall).

Building  a site with a CMS System takes time, and a lot of planning.  My advice for anyone that is looking to build/ or transition to a CMS site, is to plan your content.  If you are not able to have the content ready ahead of time, at least come up with a plan of navigation and structure for how you want to order them.  It makes life easier.

Perhaps one of the better ways to organize content ahead of time, would be to use a program like Visio.  Visio allows you to make different prototypes of things, from websites, to network drawings, to even a good outline program.

Its going to be a few long nights and work ahead to get the project done.  But, once its done, getting more content down the road will be the ongoing project.

Also, plan that everything you want to do, will take a lot longer and will not go as easily as you expect. Because you might end up distracted, maybe by clocks, Thanks Professor Krause, or even just finding the right plugin.

Stupid People

17 Jan

So, my site focuses mostly on technology, but also on my rants and raves about anything and everything.

I work for an Office Supply company, and have worked in retail for ages.  It is no surprise how stupid people can really be.

When an Ad preprint ends on a Saturday night, when you come in to find a really good deal, and find out that we are out of them, why in the world are you upset about it?  You had 6 and half days to come in and get the idem.  If you thought it was a good deal, odds are that others did as well.  Grrr.  No, we don’t have any left, no we don’t get you one, and no it’s not my fault that you waited so long.

Also, when a store closes at 9pm, don’t ever show up at 8:55 and expect great service.  We all want to get out of work and go on with our lives. Yes we will be pleasant, but we are going to be somewhat short and push you to get what you want, and move on.

Welcome to retail.  I guess I should really get over this fact, as I’ve worked in retail for almost 8 years now, but still stupid people never fail to amaze me.

When I feel that I have seen it all, People of Wal-Mart save the day, and make me realize that I am somewhat normal after all :)

Social Media

05 Jan

What in the world is all of this social media stuff we keep hearing about?

Social Media is defined as “A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content.”

Well, that by itself doesn’t really help one understand what social media is, or why its important.  To me, social media is using any user based site (such as facebook, or twitter) to promote yourself and your ideas.

What does it do for us?  This is harder to determine what it really does for the world.  Yes, we have people that send twitter updates about their trips to the bathroom or their lunch menu, but there are also people that use twitter to communicate and spread ideas and have quite the following.   Most of the people that have mastered social media use  a combination of services to bring together a community of followers.

One of the first masters of social media that I can think of is Chris Pirillo. Since the late 1990′s, Chris has been working on a web site called “LockerGnome”.  His site has newsletters and blogs from people ranging from nobody’s to higher up people in the technology world.   In early 2007, Chris went from former TV host (TechTV) to social media master.  He created his live streaming site, Live.Pirillo.com.  He took a few different types of new and old technology to help promote himself in ways that were very new and still are somewhat strange even 3 years later.

Pirillo took live streaming video from Ustream.tv, incorporated irc from GeekShed.net, and twitter into one medium to create a real time social following, somewhat the birth of social media.

While Chris Pirillo is an extreme example of social media, most people do find themselves using social media daily. From Facebook, MySpace, Ustream, twitte,r and even IRC, many users are finding more creative ways to make their online image different and more appealing.  Technology new and old is brought together in different ways to help bridge everything together.  Is this Web2.0? Perhaps; to me, it’s more about finding ways to share ideas with friends.  After all, how many of us have clicked on a link on Facebook of a random web page that someone has found and thought it was the best in the world and shared with it others?  This is social media after all
